The Northern Centre for Research on Aging and Communication began in May of 2002 with an award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and support from Nipissing University to Dr. Dana R. Murphy.
The primary focus of this research centre is to advance our understanding of the factors influencing the ways in which older adults process and understand speech. As we age, our ability to hear speech in noisy situations appears to decrease. This decrease will be noticeable even amongst those seniors with the most well-preserved hearing abilities. At the Northern Centre for Research on Aging and Communication, we are attempting to understand why this difficulty exists and how changes with age in such factors as cognitive function (e.g., selective attention or memory) and hearing, influence the ability to understand and remember.
Younger adults under the age of 29 and older adults over the age of 60 are invited to participate in the research projects of the centre. All of our participants receive a small honorarium for their time and effort.
Students wishing to learn more about developmental psychology and research are also invited to volunteer as research assistants. In addition, students are welcome to complete their Psychology Honour’s Thesis in the centre.
